Since the first working days of the W.W. Smith Charitable Trust, G. Morris (Morrie) Dorrance, Jr. had been a trusted advisor and confidant. Morrie was a long serving Director of Kewanee Industries, Inc. and a good friend of Bill Smith. Because of that personal relationship he well understood the mission of the Charitable Trust that Bill wanted to pursue and the goals he wanted to achieve. Morrie helped keep the Trust on Bill’s course. Furthermore, throughout 30 years as an advisor, Morrie enabled the Trust to function efficiently and effectively, calling upon resources under his control to “help out” when there was a need at the Trust.
One such resource, who also became a close friend, was Charles (Charlie) B. Humpton, Jr. Beginning with the early investments of the Trust, Charlie helped oversee the “money making” side of the operation, generating funds which were dispersed to thousands of organizations over the years and monies which were added to the Trust so it could grow. Thanks to Charlie’s efforts, more people are being helped today than when the Trust started.
Both of these gentlemen were instrumental in the successful launch of the W.W. Smith Charitable Trust and for its continued eminence for the past three decades. To say they will be missed is an obvious understatement. They were great friends to the Trust and in that connection, benefactors to our community.
